“VISIONS OF WARRIORS” TO SCREEN ONLINE FOR THE CITY OF COMMERCE PUBLIC LIBRARY

“Visions of Warriors” will be screening online for the City of Commerce Public Library from Monday, 5/18/2020 to Monday, 6/1/2020. A Q&A with director Ming Lai, James Zenner of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, and Dr. Christina Robinson, the Military Sexual Trauma Coordinator for the Greater Los Angeles VA Healthcare System, will be held on Thursday, 6/4/2020, at 6:00 p.m. The Q&A will be recorded and available after the event. This special event is a part of the California Center for the Book’s Community Conversations with Veterans initiative. Originally, this screening and Q&A was supposed to be a live event. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the California Center for the Book and the City of Commerce Public Library along with other participating libraries have quickly adapted to the challenging situation and moved this program online. Community Conversations with Veterans is a partnership between California Center for the Book and Veterans Connect @ the Library. The initiative offers California libraries the opportunity to connect more closely with veterans and their families, while also helping veterans and their families connect to the community and resources. California Center for the Book is a program of the California Library Association, supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. We’re based in Los Angeles near the City of Commerce so we’re honored to be able to serve this dynamic city. “VISIONS OF WARRIORS” ADDED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA SCHOOL OF NURSING’S ONLINE CURRICULUM

We had the honor of screening “Visions of Warriors” at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing back in 2017 when we started distributing our feature documentary. Since then, they have been continuing to use our film for their classes in mental health for their Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. The film stars Susan Quaglietti who is a nurse practitioner who has been serving veterans for more than 30 years and founded the Veteran Photo Recovery Project. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the university has shifted to teaching virtually, like most universities and educational institutions. “Visions of Warriors” will be used for their online curriculum, offering powerful programming. Elaine Darst, the Co-Director of the BSN Program/School of Nursing, states, “We really appreciated being part of your rollout of the film. It continues to provide insight for students working with veterans and with the chronicity of the mental health issues.” According to U.S. News and World Report, the University of Minnesota is ranked number 21 in “Best Nursing Schools: Doctor of Nursing Practice” in 2021. “VISIONS OF WARRIORS” TO SCREEN FOR THE SAN JOSE PUBLIC LIBRARY/DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. LIBRARY AND SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY

Originally, the California Center for the Book, San Jose Public Library/Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, and San Jose State University (SJSU) were planning to host a live screening of “Visions of Warriors” and Q&A with filmmaker Ming Lai and veteran Mark Pinto. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this live event will be postponed. However, to comply with the state’s “stay at home” order and practice “social distancing,” they will be holding a virtual screening instead, offered free to library patrons and university students and faculty from Monday, 4/20/2020 to Monday, 5/4/2020. On Thursday, 4/23/2020, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., there will be a Q&A with Ming and Mark, moderated by Jemerson Diaz, a U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) veteran, former SJSU Communications Department adjunct faculty member, SJSU Mental Health Ambassador, Veterans Embracing Transition (VET) Connect peer leader, Warriors at Home teaching assistant, and National Alliance on Mental Illness leader. Mark is a USMC veteran, SJSU alumnus, VET Connect alumnus, and artist. We’re pleased to announce that “Visions of Warriors” feature documentary will be screening at the Arcadia Public Library on Monday, 4/20/2020, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Arcadia is part of the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles. Based in this diverse and thriving region, we’re proud to call it our home. It’s an honor to be able to share our film with its residents, in particular veterans and their families. This screening is made possible by “Community Conversations with Veterans,” a partnership between the California libraries and the respected California Center for the Book. The Arcadia Public Library’s community partner for the screening is the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage, which will be unveiling a new Arcadia Veterans Kiosk. We’re excited to announce that “Visions of Warriors” will be screening at the Kern County Library/Beale Memorial Library on Tuesday, 4/7/2020, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. as part of California Center for the Book and the California libraries’ “ Community Conversations with Veterans” program. The original Beale Memorial Library with its mission style architecture was opened in 1900. Because of an earthquake in 1957, it moved to a new location on Truxtun Avenue. In 1988, a new main library building at this location was opened and has served the community ever since. The Kern County Library system offers Veterans Resource Centers at multiple locations. Its goal is to offer its customers a positive library experience and outstanding service. We’re thrilled to announce that “Visions of Warriors” will be screening at the Coronado Public Library on Saturday, 3/21/2020, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. as part of the California Center for the Book and California libraries’ Community Conversations with Veterans program. Coronado and surrounding San Diego are home to many veterans and active military. Founded in 1890, the library on picturesque Coronado island has a rich history. John D. Spreckels, the owner of the iconic Hotel del Coronado, built the library with its classic revival architecture and gave it to the city of Coronado and its people. According to its website, the mission of the library is to “promote reading, life-long learning, and the pursuit of knowledge.” Its veterans resources include “Veterans Connect @ the Library,” which connects veterans and their families to benefits and services for which they are eligible. We’re truly honored to screen “Visions of Warriors” at the Vandenburg Air Force Base on Tuesday, 8/6/19, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The goal of our documentary has always been to assist both veterans and active military. We deeply appreciate this wonderful opportunity to share our film with this storied Air Force base. Established in 1941 and located in California’s Central Coast, Vandenburg is the third largest Air Force base in the U.S. and host of the 30th Space Wing. This screening is made possible by many helping agencies at the base—their Mental Health team, Legal team, Inspector General (IG), Equal Opportunity (EO), Sexual Assault Response and Prevention (SAPR), and Special Victim’s Counsel (SVC). “Visions of Warriors” will be screening at the British Association of Art Therapists / International Art Therapy Practice/Research Conference on Saturday, 7/13/19, between 4:15 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. Because this feature documentary is 93 minutes long, a 10-minute preview will be screened. The screening will take place at the historic Queen Mary University of London, whose history dates back to 1785. According to their site, the respected British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT) is a “professional organization for art therapists in the UK” and “works to promote art therapy and provides professional support and advice to its members.” At its dynamic International Art Therapy Practice/Research Conference, “art therapists from 35 countries present the newest of practice innovations and research.” Thank you to Val Huet, Alex McDonald, and the British Association of Art Therapists for this great honor!

We’re excited to announce that “Visions of Warriors” will be screening at the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health / Veterans and Loved Ones Recovery (VALOR) on Wednesday, 5/15/19, at 12:30 p.m. in celebration of Mental Health Month. The screening will take place at their headquarters in the historic Bob Hope Patriotic Hall. According to their site, VALOR’s mission is to “provide mental health services to Veterans and their families, regardless of VA eligibility status and military discharge, in a supportive environment.” The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health’s mission, in turn, is to “optimize the hope, recovery, wellbeing, and life trajectory of Los Angeles County’s most vulnerable through access to care and resources that promote not only independence and personal recovery but also connectedness and community reintegration.” Built in 1916, the Bob Hope Patriotic Hall is a Los Angeles landmark, serving as the home of the Los Angeles Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and many veterans services organizations. We’re thrilled to announce that “Visions of Warriors” will be screening at the Woodward Park Regional Library in Fresno, CA on Tuesday, 4/23/19, at 6:00 p.m. This library is part of the extensive Fresno County Public Library system, which offers Veterans Resource Centers at their Central Branch Library and Betty Rodriguez Branch Library. This screening is made possible by “Californians: Community Conversations with Veterans,” a partnership between the California Center for the Book and Veterans Connect @ the Library. The library’s community partner for this screening is CalVet (California Department of Veterans Affairs). According to their site, “CalVet strives to ensure that its veterans of every era and their families get the state and federal benefits and services they have earned and deserve as a result of selfless and honorable military service.” Ryan Gardner, the clinical social worker who’s featured in the documentary, and Ming Lai, the director, will be attending the screening and participating in a Q&A afterward.
